Revision to Learning Context

After completing this assignment, reading others’ posts, and trying to isolate exactly what I am designing, I’ve decided to change my model from the discrepancy model to the innovation model.  So, with that said, here is my new plan:

First, I need to determine the nature of innovation.  In this case, it is a tool, specifically, Macbook Pros.  This innovation will affect learners in that it will allow them to achieve the following goals for this project:

  1. Learners will be able to produce clear and coherent analysis based on the prompt they choose in which the development, organization, and style are appropriate to task of creating a digital story using iMovie and clearly reflect understanding of the novel.
  2. Learners will be able to use iMovie to produce and publish auditory analysis, textual evidence, and graphics that communicate a clear understanding of the novel.
  3. Learners will be able to draw evidence from the novel to support their analysis, reflection, and connection to the novel, and demonstrate the evidence through their theme, storyboard, text, and graphics in iMovie.

This innovation will enhance learning and heighten engagement while aligning to established goals and common core standards because this technology adds new dimensions for learners by adding graphics, video, sound, and text in the creation of a movie clip.  In other words, this innovation is interactive, thus it enriches learning.  Resources will be provided and differentiated for learners.

The questions will be modified from my previous post and focus solely on the learners in terms of their experience with the new technology.

The learning environment is the same as my initial post.

School Environment Evaluation

In this assignment, students were required to learn about The Maturity Model Benchmarks developed in 1998 by Peter H.R. Sibley and Chip Kimball.  While the document is over 10 years old, it is relevant in that it identifies 5 major categories of the school environment (administrative, curricular, support, connectivity and innovation) and it breaks those categories down into sub categories and then into types.  When I first approached this assignment, I completed the survey sheet, but then I had to go back and adjust many of my initial assessments.  This is because as I got deeper into evaluating my school environment, I learned more about my institution; thus, the necessary changes were made to reflect my learning curve.  I now feel like I have a good foundation on which to build an informative argument as to what needs to be done at my school to increase technology use and implement strategies for training.  The following document is and evaluation of the technology environment using the Maturity Model Benchmarks of  Silver Sage High School, a pseudonym for the school I work at:

The following is the initial survey of the school environment:

RSS for Education

Basically, I see RSS as an essential time saving educational tool that can aid in my unit planning and assessments in various ways.  To begin with, RSS can be used to quickly access and read students’ work in one location, rather than collecting a journal or a portfolio, which can be cumbersome to keep organized, carry home, and grade.

For my Honors English 11 students, this could mean that as they complete their Honors Project, I could teach them first to set up a blog for the purpose of writing and sharing about their experiences, whether they chose to complete a job shadow, an altruistic endeavor or a personal improvement project.  Because I require a daily journal as they complete their hours and a Q and A with their mentor, a blogging format would be a perfect substitute for the alternative paper portfolio I currently require.

After students learn the basics, I can have them set up their blogs similar to our learning logs where they will showcase their evidence for their project and post reflections about their experiences. Just as portfolios are personal and reflect the individual’s personality, I would encourage students to set up their blogs to mirror their creativity and organizational style with just a few guidelines that I already have in place.

After I subscribe to their blogs through RSS and organize folders by class or by project, I can teach students to subscribe to each other’s  blogs through RSS.   I will encourage them to not only comment on each other’s progress, but to share ideas and resources. I can even include this as part of my final assessment.  Overall, this project can be taken to new heights incorporating blogs and RSS feeds.

AECT Standards:

Horizon Report Tech Trends

This lesson plan was not only a lot of fun for me to teach, but my students really enjoyed it from start to finish. As I mentioned in my previous post, my students created a VoiceThread analyzing chapters in The Grapes of Wrath. They loved using this interface and are excited to use it again in other classes that require presentations.

My tech trends lesson plan incorporates my students’ VoiceThread presentations, and adds new technology that allowed me to assess their learning by using the following tools: M-Scorative and Evernote.

As students watched each groups’ VoiceThread presentations, they took notes on the Evernote interface and had a tab open for formative assessments on M-Socrative (student).

Evernote not only served multiple purposes for this lesson, but it also will be used on upcoming assignments.  For example, students were able to digitally share their notes with other students, students shared their notes with me so that I could assess their work, students were able to access their notes for their formative assessments on M-Socrative, students will be able to use their notes for an in-class essay final, and students can use the interface for other classes. In addition, not only does this interface allow students to take notes and keep them organized, it also allows them to record and take pictures, both useful additional tools that can capture important subject matter in the classroom.

M-Socrative is really easy to set up and use, especially since students do not have to sign up for anything.  This interface allowed me to ask my students short answer questions during transitional periods throughout the presentations and at the end of class as an exit ticket assessment.  This interface also allows instructors to upload several different types of quizzes such as true or false, and multiple choice.  Because formative assessments are vital to assessing student comprehension, this tool is valuable in that it is easy to use, easy to access, and engaging for the students.  In fact, my students thought it was fun.  In addition, it can be used as a scaffold for summative assessments because data can be saved and analyzed by the instructor to assist in building future assessments.

ACET Standards Rationales

2.4  Integrated Technologies: This standard has been met because students used several different types of media to produce and deliver information using a computer, including VoiceThread, Evernote, M-Socrative.  In addition, these technologies were integrated in such a way that they complimented each other and built off each other engaging and enhancing student learning.

3.1 Media Utilization: Media utilization is the systematic use of resources for learning and in this lesson plan the resources encompassed visual, audio, and hands on learning.

5.3 Formative and Summative Evaluation: Formative evaluation for this lesson was directly linked to the Evernote shared by each student with the instructor and also by utilizing M-Socrative for this purpose.  Summative evaluation will involve gathering information used in the formative assessments and applying it to create a summative assessment.

The Digital Divide Presentation

Digital Divide Presentation – EdTech 501, posted with vodpod

This was a really interesting, fun, and sometimes frustrating project.  To begin with, the content was very interesting and informative.  Through research and reading the commentary of fellow students, I learned a great deal about not only the history of the digital divide, but also how the definition has evolved and what different states are doing about this problem.  I was even enlightened about my own state, Idaho, as to what our Superintendent is striving for and why.  In addition, I learned a lot about how Michigan, Illinois, and Wisconsin are dealing with this, and I think that much of the country should follow their example.
I really had a lot of fun collaborating on Blackboard and using Google Docs for notes and creating a Powerpoint that we could all work on at the same time!  That was cool!  I learned a lot about the technology, and even though it is a bit difficult sometimes in terms of multiple people speaking at once, there were definitely ways around that, and we all worked together to make it a success.  VoiceThread is also unique, and I liked learning and using the interface, though the doodle tool was a little annoying; I wish it worked better.
Currently, my Honors English 11 students are creating a powerpoint in the same way that we were required to create,  but their only form of communication is through Google Docs; they cannot speak, or they lose points!   I want them to experience what I experienced; communication via writing; a clear and concise form of communication that involves thinking about the written word, the tone, and the intent. Most of my students were new to all of the ways that I showed them they could communicate using Google Docs (directly on the PP using comments, on the side chat area, or on a separate doc).  They are enjoying it very much, and I am too.  They have to actually copy and paste their chats for me and add them into their docs so that I can monitor their conversations and decisions.
The frustrating aspect involved a few group members who were not truly committed to the project.  In fact, one member completely quit.   However, the group members who were dedicated followed through, and we produced a good product while learning to work together in a digital, collaborative environment.

Glog: Roll with it! The Evolution of ETECH Definition

Gloghttp://www.glogster.com/edit/g-6louhru4no4qcit2u4c1ga0

NOTE:  THIS WILL PULL UP IN EDITING MODE; PLEASE CLICK ON PREVIEW TO VIEW.  Also, items move around each time the Glog is accessed, so please consider this because if something isn’t lined up, it was, and this is a glitch in the program.  Thank you.

I approached this assignment with the intent to create a Glog that I could actually use to teach at the high school level.  Although I wouldn’t normally teach the evolution of the definition of technology, I would, however, teach the evolution of Post Modernism.

I thought about my approach, and I envisioned presenting this Glog on a smartboard, so I came up with a game board theme because I thought it would be a good attention getter.  It’s colorful, and it leads the reader from start to finish, or in this case, infinity.  I added the # 1 pop hit for the decade and/or year because during our discussion of the evolution of post modernism, I would have my students make connections between the culture of the decade and the literature.  Similarly, I thought that in understanding the evolution of EDTECH, it is important to understand the culture and make connections between the two because not only does technology influence the culture, but the culture influences changes in technology, thereby forcing the definition of EDTECH to evolve.  Moreover, students love music, and I know it would add to their engagement in the lesson.

I learned a lot from this interface; some of the technology I liked while other aspects of it were a little frustrating.  To begin with, I liked having two layout options.  In addition, the features including the multimedia tools added much-needed dimension to the project.  On the other hand, not only would my project not save and share, but every time I pulled it up to work on, items would mysteriously be misplaced, and I had to constantly realign them.   I hope that these glitches can be resolved because they would impact my decision to use this interface or recommend it to my peers.

Rationale for AECT standard 2.0; 2.4

Not only is this glog a computer based instructional tool, but also it integrates technology using several forms of media including audiovisual and text to impact learning.
